Philip started his coaching career in Track and Field with St. Birinus School and Severn A.C. He specialises in Field events. Over the years he has developed 5 athletes through to international level. Whilst teaching at St. Birinus Philip changed to coaching Weightlifting. St. Birinus is now recognised as the most successful school Weightlifting club in England.

The club has a very successful senior team that competes in several international tournaments each season. Last year the team won the national Weightlifting league for the third time. Philip has developed 9 lifters through too international level and been a coach to the GB team at 4 European championships. His greatest achievement is having the privilege to coach and support Ben Watson on his journey to medal success at the Commonwealth Games. A journey that started 14 years ago.

Over the past 3 years Philip has worked closely with Professor Steve Peters, developing a mind management program for Weightlifting. This program includes a mind warm up for competitions and thinking skills that can be practiced to improve the chances of success in training and competition

Philip Karlsson was awarded “Community Coach of The Year 2015” by British Weight Lifting.
